Japan to use AI to combat online manga and anime piracy

Japan, recognized as the cradle of anime and manga pop culture, is innovating with a daring project: the use of artificial intelligence to fight against piracy. This initiative aims to protect its works and preserve the income of its creators.
A growing piracy phenomenon
Every year, Japan loses billions of dollars to websites offering illegal downloads manga and anime. More than 1,000 sites are identified, illegally broadcasting content, thus disrupting the local economy. Japanese publishers estimate that approximately 70% of piracy sites operate in foreign languages such as English, Chinese and Vietnamese.
The innovative initiative of the Japanese government
To counter this trend, the Tokyo cultural agency proposed a pilot project with a budget of 300 million yen (approximately 2 million dollars). This initiative will implement AI to scour the web for pirated contentthanks to advanced image and text detection systems. Keiko Momii, head of the cultural agency, said: “Copyright holders spend a lot of human resources trying to manually detect pirated content online. »
Despite the efforts of human moderators, the agency recognized that they struggle to follow the constant proliferation illegal content. The use of AI could therefore transform the way Japan manages intellectual property and protects its creative industries.
Korean inspiration
This project echoes a similar initiative in South Koreawhere AI has proven its effectiveness in the fight against piracy. If this project in Japan meets with the expected success, it could be extended to other sectors, notably cinema and music, thus offering enhanced protection to cultural works.
An essential economic engine
Japan considers its creative industries as an engine of growth equivalent to other robust sectors such as steel or semiconductors. As part of its strategy “ Cool Japan “, the government aims to move exports of cultural goods to 20 trillion yen ($130 billion) by 2033. This ambition highlights the importance of video games, manga and anime for the Japanese economy.
In 2022, these sectors generated a turnover of 4.7 trillion yen ($30 billion) from exports, a figure almost equivalent to that of electronic chip exports, valued at 5.7 trillion yen.
A promising future for the Japanese creative sector
As Japan prepares to adopt this innovative technology to protect its cultural heritage, the implementation of artificial intelligence in the fight against piracy could become an example for other countries to follow. This project not only secures the income of creators, but also strengthens Japan’s position as a leader in the creative industries.
